Our Longkang Story
It all began in the sixties, whereby our family lived in the ‘kampung’ (a malay name for village).
Children living in the kampung often played together in the great outdoors. Around the kampung, one could easily find many ‘longkangs’ (a malay word for drains). On rainy days, the longkangs would be flooded and fishes (mainly longkang fish) would be found swimming in them.
Seeing the longkangs filled to the brim with water and fishes, children would quickly bring their empty jam bottles and start catching fishes there. Of course, our siblings also found this an amusing game – catching fish in ‘longkangs’.
As time passed, it developed into every child’s favourite past time
As Singapore progressed and advanced in every area, kampungs are demolished and children lost the outdoors as people all moved into flats. They are cooped up at home and glued to the one-eyed monster. Many have to study very hard and most of the time, outdoor play is taken away.
That’s when ..
Pasir Ris Kid’s Kampong was birthed.
As we greatly enjoyed this outdoor game in our childhood, we want to share this great fun in the longkangs with every child. We, at Kid’s Kampong, are committed to preserve this authentic novel way of longkang fishing.
We want every child of today to experience it first hand. This favourite past time of childhood days must be carried on and on………
Pasir Ris Kid’s Kampong started in 1997 at Pasir Ris Park, Elias Road. We were operating there till the end of 2004 before we shifted to our new premise at Pasir Ris Farmway 1 in 2005.
